Iowa stop breast cancer
Join us to STOP breast cancer!
Breast cancer will claim the lives of more than 40,000 women and men in the U.S. this year. In 1975, a woman had a 1 in 11 chance of developing invasive breast cancer in her lifetime. Now that risk is 1 in 8, nearly 50% greater. While slightly fewer women and men die every year from this disease due to advances in treatment, we need to eliminate breast cancer altogether. The Beyond Pink TEAM in Iowa aims to do just that. It is a member organization of the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) that works to end breast cancer. There are several actions we are taking to reach this goal. NBCC is currently working with researchers and patient advocates on the Artemis Project, which is developing a preventive breast cancer vaccine. That’s right, a vaccine for breast cancer. Imagine a world where we do not have to worry about toxic treatments because no one needs to be treated. No one gets breast cancer. No one dies of breast cancer. A vaccine would do the one thing awareness cannot — save the lives of the women and men we love. Other research is investigating new methods of arresting this disease by preventing metastasis. New research investigates the circumstances under which localized cancers spread or don’t spread. We successfully have lobbied for an appropriation that funds “innovative, high-impact research through a partnership of scientists and consumers.” Another aspect of our work is to broaden access to high-quality medical care and treatment. |
