National Breast Cancer Coalition

spacer line
The Beyond Pink TEAM is a member organization of the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) and serves on its Board of Directors. NBCC combines the power of advocacy, education, policy, and research to unite around one goal: ending breast cancer. Local Iowa advocates, trained by NBCC, are shaping breast cancer public policy by participating in legislative, scientific and regulatory decisions; promoting critical analysis of breast cancer information, media coverage, and actively working to change all systems that affect our mission to eradicate breast cancer.

What is NBCC?
Founded in 1991, NBCC is a collaboration of activists, survivors, researchers, policy-makers, grassroots groups and national organizations that have come together as disruptive innovators for social change. It is a coalition that links hundreds of organizations and tens of thousands of individuals from across the country into a dynamic, diverse coalition that gives breast cancer a meaningful voice in Washington, D.C., and state capitals; in laboratories and health care institutions; and in local communities everywhere.

Beyond Pink TEAM advocates work collaboratively with the nation-wide group of advocates associated with NBCC to:
  • Ask the tough questions.
  • Challenge scientists.
  • Tell the truth.
  • Lobby for research funding and access to care.
  • Push for what will save lives.

NBCC Offers Educational Opportunities for Advocates
NBCC provides a number of opportunities for our Beyond Pink TEAM advocates to be more effective. This includes an annual Advocate Leadership Summit, Project LEAD, and Team Leader Training. If you’re interested in these opportunities, please reach out to us using our Contact Us form.
  • At the Advocate Leadership Summit, advocates have the opportunity to learn strategies from other advocates and to learn about the latest research from scientific researchers currently engaged in work related to issues that impact our goal of ending breast cancer. Additionally, advocates spend a day on Capitol Hill advocating for NBCC legislative and public policy priorities.
  • Project LEAD gives our advocates a strong foundation regarding the science of breast cancer.
  • Team Leader Training prepares grassroots leaders to work toward ending breast cancer through the annual legislative and public policy agenda of NBCC. Substantive instruction in each priority readies grassroots advocates to serve as delegation leaders for the NBCC spring Washington Lobby Day meetings held on Capitol Hill.
NBCC’s National Action Network
Every year, the NBCC Board of Directors sets legislative and public policy priorities and NBCC staff assists by setting a strategic approach to enact those policies. This strategy is communicated to grassroots advocates all across the country through a National Action Network. Anyone can join to receive “action alerts” at strategic times with information about concrete things you can do to advance the cause of ending breast cancer.

Additionally, Beyond Pink TEAM advocates share opportunities to further the NBCC priorities, as well as state and local advocacy efforts, on the Beyond Pink TEAM social media sites and the Iowa Stop Breast Cancer Facebook group page.

Overarching Goals That Guide Our Work with NBCC
Our work with the National Breast Cancer Coalition is guided by three primary goals:
  • Research: Promote research into the cause of, and optimal preventive and treatment interventions for, breast cancer through increased federal funding, fostering of innovation and collaborative approaches and improved accountability.
  • Access: Improve access to quality breast cancer care for all women and men, from appropriate screening policies through diagnosis, treatment and care—particularly for the underserved and uninsured—through legislation and change in systems of delivery of health care.
  • Influence: Educate and empower women and men as advocates, increasing the involvement and influence of those living with breast cancer and other breast cancer activists wherever and whenever breast cancer decisions are made.
Meeting our goals will take our greatest efforts and will require a focus on the administration, U.S. Congress, research institutions and consumer advocates on breast cancer.
